Our Pastoral System – Care and Courtesy, Respect and Responsibility
At St Brigid’s College, Pastoral Care permeates all aspects of school life; the provision of high quality pastoral care is at the very centre of our approach to education. We aim to create an environment in which: pupils are happy, secure and confident; each pupil is valued as a unique individual; and, all relationships are based on mutual respect.
Our Pastoral Aims
- To enable each pupil to realise their own potential both academically and socially.
- To ensure that each pupil has access to effective personal, vocational and academic guidance and support.
- To provide opportunities for and encourage pupils to exercise individual and social responsibility.
- To promote in pupils the self-awareness and self-confidence that they need to face the challenges, both academic and personal, that are placed on them.
- To establish and maintain an appropriate relationship with every parent, so that together we can help to prepare the pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.
We work hard to provide an effective framework of support for our pupils:-
- Every pupil will meet with their Form Teacher daily. Form Teachers monitor attendance, punctuality, academic progress and pupil conduct. They liaise with subject teachers, the Heads of Year and parents.
- Heads of Year co-ordinate the work of the Pastoral Team. They monitor academic progress and pupil conduct within their year group. They promote Home/School links, links with external agencies, provide individual support and meet with parents as necessary.
- Heads of Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4/5 have pastoral responsibility for the pupils in Junior and Senior schools.
- The Principal has overall responsibility for the whole-school pastoral system.
Counselling sessions are offered on a weekly basis in the school. We work with qualified professional external agencies to offer guidance and advice to those pupils facing personal trauma, bereavement, difficult home circumstances, stress, bullying or abuse. Our counselling sessions also contribute to the St Brigid’s College agenda of improving educational outcomes for all by tackling effectively all barriers to learning.
At St Brigid’s College, we recognise that younger pupils sometimes need support. Our Peer Mentoring System ensures a smooth transition from Year 7 in primary school into Year 8 at post-primary and develops a caring community and encourages pupils to be supportive of each other. Peer Mentors are selected from our current Post-16 cohort; each Year 8 is assigned a personal mentor who will listen, reassure, and lend a friendly ear to any concerns. Peer Mentors are an invaluable resource and a visible demonstration of the caring culture that is part of our school.
The Student Council in St Brigid’s College represents the student voice and is a vital part of our school community. The Council provides opportunities to listen to the views, opinions and ideas of all students in the school. Representatives are voted onto the Council annually from each year group, thus ensuring that all pupils have an input into improving school life. In recent years, the Student Council has been at the forefront of some exciting initiatives at the college, including the introduction of the new school coat.
St Brigid’s College is committed to the protection of each and every pupil in our school. We aim to provide a safe environment for all pupils and work closely with external organisations to ensure that child well-being is at the heart of our school.
Rewarding Positive Behaviour
We, in St Brigid’s College, have high expectations of every pupil. We believe in recognising pupils’ personal best and celebrating their achievements, including full and most improved attendance, punctuality, academic excellence and commitment to improvement. We celebrate success in many ways through a variety of events during the school year, including annual Prizegiving, termly Reward Assemblies, and recognition at monthly assemblies for attendance and subject competitions.
